ABOUT EASDON
Easdon is all about location!
Above a wooded valley on the Eastern side of Dartmoor National Park, Easdon Cottage and the Barn have views over open moorland and fields. The house is a classic granite built Dartmoor farmhouse with historic roots back beyond the 17th Century and takes its name from Easdon Down on whose flanks it is situated; the Barn is near, but separate from Easdon Cottage. Nestling into the hill and on the edge of the bridlepath leading on to Easdon Down, the house and Barn are at an altitude of about 1,100 feet. The Down gives protection from North and East winds and Hameldown, the edge of the high moor, can be seen across the valley. The setting is remote and tranquil and yet the villages and towns of Moretonhampstead, Widecombe, Chagford and Bovey Tracey are all within easy reach. Exeter and the South coast (with its sandy beaches) are twenty miles away and North Bovey and Manaton are but a three mile walk. The area offers opportunities for walking, riding or cycling, with places to visit and local attractions.
At different times of the year the countryside is rich with varied species of wildlife and wild flowers. Artists and photographers find much to inspire them here as do those who share a fascination for the natural world or those who seek peace, quiet and inner nourishment.
Hugh and Liza came to Easdon in 1999, opening the house and barn to share this lovely location. Over the years many people have savoured the peacefulness and seclusion to be found here. The feeling of being in Nature here makes the need to be as non-invasive as possible in the landscape a necessity. This includes our bias towards organic and local food and the use of non-harmful products. Recycling is an important priority for us - fortunately our local authority is very keen on this too. We also attempt to follow as much as possible the principles of sustainability in how we garden, shop and bank. Reducing our dependency on oil is an on-going project, looking for alternative methods of heating for the Cottage and the Barn. Reducing car use is a particular challenge also - we look forward to the production of hydrogen and water cars as well as the hybrids becoming more available.
